Ideally the hospital should have standard protocols for the pre and post procedure care depending on the surgical procedure patient goes through.

There could also be standard protocols for medical patients based on diagnosis.

However, each doctor has subtle differences in the protocol to be followed for a specific procedure. Nurses have to look for the doctor specific protocol. In absense of doctor specific protocol, nurses will follow the standard protocol.

The protocols are stored in the database. Theses are periodically reviewed by the doctor.
